Here is one that you don’t hear about as much but it is very important to your health. Vitamin P is referred to as bioflavonoids. Bioflavonoids are called a vitamin to make it easy for them to be classified but, they are not simply a vitamin. There are many different ingredients that make up bioflavonoids. Some of them include hesperidin, hesperin, quercetin, eriodictyol and rutin.

Your body depends solely on the foods that you eat to supply it with vitamin P as it cannot be manufactured by the body in any way. Foods that contain vitamin P include the following:

  • Peppers
  • Grapes
  • Onions
  • Red berries
  • Blue berries
  • Buckwheat
  • Green tea
  • Garlic

It can also be found underneath the citrus peel such as in oranges, in the white substance that is found there.

So why do we need Vitamin P? There are several benefits associated with vitamin P. When athletes suffer from injuries vitamin P can be used to help treat these injuries because it can be used as a pain reliever. Anyone suffering from back pain or leg pains can benefit from this vitamin as well. Bioflavonoids are used to treat oral herpes and reduce the symptoms associated with prolonged bleeding. They have what is considered to be an antibacterial effect and can aid in promoting circulation.

Vitamin P can help to prevent or treat cataracts and assist in helping the body fight off allergies. They can be used to stimulate bile production and lower blood cholesterol levels. Bioflavonoids also help with the absorption of iron into the body.

It is recommended that vitamin P be taken with vitamin C because, it is believed to help enhance the absorption of vitamin C into the body. They make a great combination. It is also believed that bioflavonoids can prolong the effects of vitamin C, which make them a very important part of your nutritional needs. Bioflavonoids can also assist in controlling asthma symptoms and because it helps vitamin C to maintain the thin walls of the capillaries, it is believed to aid in the prevention of bruising and excessive bleeding.

Vitamin P or bioflavonoids have a lot of interesting points that you should be familiar with. For instance, as mentioned above, vitamin P works best when used in conjunction with vitamin C as they compliment each other very well. Unlike some vitamins bioflavonoids can be stored in the body but, they are absorbed fairly slowly.

It is not common for a deficiency of vitamin P to be found in a healthy adult but bruising easily could be a sign of a deficiency. If you have a very high intake of vitamin P and receive too much in your body, it could result in symptoms of diarrhea.

Anyone suffering from cold sores can benefit from vitamin P, if supplements are taken daily. If you have a daily amount of vitamin P combined with vitamin C it is possible that you would be less susceptible to catching colds and other common viruses. This is definitely an interesting fact for many people, especially during cold and flu season.
